POSITION SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITY

 

The dental hygienist is to provide dental hygienist services to Indian and other people accessing services at the Jamestown S'Klallam Dental Clinic. The position also takes a lead role in providing preventive care and dental education to members of the Jamestown S'Klallam tribal communities. The position operates within a strong team environment and under the health standards of the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe.

 

DUTIES

 

CLINICAL

 

  • Examines patient's oral cavity including the mouth, throat, and pharynx, and records conditions of the teeth and surrounding tissues.

     

  • Refers patients to the dentist who has abnormalities such as cavities, defective fillings, suspicious growths, or periodontal disease.

     

  • Applies desensitizing agents and other topical agents to treat abnormalities such as gingivitis and Vincent's infection.

     

  • Performs complete oral prophylactics including the following: seats and drapes the patients; applies to disclose solution to the teeth; performs supragingival and subgingival scaling using cavitron and scalers to remove calculus deposits, accretions, and stains; polished teeth using bristle brushes, rubber caps, polishing strips, and prophylactic paste; and applies tropical fluorides, other anticariogenic agents and occlusal sealants. Cleans and polishes removable dental appliances worn by patients.

     

  • Exposes, develops, and mounts oral X-rays including bite wing, panoramic and peripical. Interprets X-rays to determine areas of calculus deposits and periodontal involvement, the relationship of the teeth, etc. Selects and arranges X-rays as teaching devises for viewing by patients.

     

  • Records the number of patients treated and type of treatment administered.

     

  • Checks and maintains instruments to ensure working conditions.

     

  • Cleans, sharpens, and sterilizes instruments.

     

  • Instruct patients, individually and in groups, in proper oral hygiene care using material such as teeth models, displays, slides, tooth brushes, dental floss, disclosing tablets, mirrors, and phase microscopes.

     

  • Demonstrates proper techniques of brushing, flossing, and use of necessary periodontal aids.

     

  • Instruct patients on the removal of dental appliances.

 

PREVENTIVE

 

  • Teaches the common causes of tooth decay and its relationship to general diet, with a special focus on baby bottle tooth decay.

     

  • Contributes articles to the monthly tribal newsletter and provides community health education relating to dental care.

     

  • Acts as a liaison with Jamestown S'Klallam youth programs and the Sequim school district.

     

  • Assists with the purchasing of educational promotions and incentives for children.

     

  • Oversees community dental education activities and such events as the tribal health fair(s).

 

ADMINISTRATIVE

 

  • Aid in compliance of instruction of hazardous material communications and infection control procedures.

     

  • Assist in developing and implementing Dental Clinic policies and procedures that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of services.

     

  • Assist with training of dental assistants and orientation/training of on-call dental assistant staff.

     

  • Assist with Dental Program goal setting and planning.

     

  • Attend dental staff meetings.

     

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Dental Hygienist license required.

     

  • Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid certification.

     

  • Thorough understanding of the operations of a professional clinic.

     

  • Cultural sensitivity required. Ability to interact with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, maintain confidentiality, and work well as a member of a team.

     

  • Knowledge of dental and oral anatomy, oral physiology, oral histology, radiology and nutrition, the principles and techniques of preventive dentistry, and the instruments and materials to perform procedures including prophylactic treatment, and make appropriate referrals to the dentist.

     

  • Skill and dexterity in performing prophylactic procedures such as scaling, curettage and root planning.

     

  • Skill in providing individual and group instruction to assist patients in understanding the cause and prevention of dental disease and to motivate patients toward the practice of good oral care.

     

  • Basic personal computer skills required as well as the ability to learn dental office scheduling and electronic tooth and periodontal charting software, word processing and other software programs.

     

  • American Indian/Alaska Native preferences apply.

  • Constantly requires the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make find discrimination in sound.

 

Travel Requirements:

 

Local, State or out of State travel may be occasionally required.

 

NOTICE

 

This position is covered by the provisions of the Crime Control Act of 1990, Subchapter V - Child Care Worker Employee Background Checks (42 U.S.C. 13041) and the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act of 1990 (25 U.S.C. 3201-3210). As such, each applicant will be required, as a pre-condition to employment, to submit to a 5-year criminal history background check, including fingerprinting. The applicant will be able to obtain a copy of the criminal history report (from the reporting agency) made available to the Tribe and they will have the right to challenge the accuracy and completeness of the information contained in the report.
