Under general supervision, the Photojournalist is responsible for capturing current news and events relevant to the Ak-Chin Indian Community through attending activities and events, Community meetings, conducting interviews and writing articles within critical deadlines set.  Other responsibilities include custom and specialized photography using photographic equipment and may sell advertising for the bi-weekly newspaper.  Work requires the flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on the job assignment and the ability to handle multiple priorities.  If selected for an interview, all interviews will be in person.  No telephone/skype interviews.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:


Experience equivalent to one-year general journalism, photography, and interviewing, or closely related work experience. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must also have reliable transportation to travel to some job assignments.  This position requires the ability to be flexible to work after regular working hours, weekends and holidays. Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements. Must successfully complete a background check.

Examples of Duties:

  • Responsible for the development and creation of news articles through trending news, events, interviews, and photographs using journalistic skills for submission and approval to the Managing Editor.
  • Obtain information for articles by researching, analyzing and verifying the credibility of the source of information.
  • Responsible for downloading content such as publications and photos to CD, for archiving purposes.
  • Attend various community meetings, activities and events regarding Community issues and the surrounding areas in order to obtain accurate and informative information.
  • Taking photographs with photographic equipment and, downloading, editing photographs to use for the newspaper, or print related needs.
  • Assist in desktop publishing to promote/design variety of printing services.
  • Assist in the layout of paper to include set up pages for layout, the arrangement of photos and articles.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of the newspaper.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of general photojournalism principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of digital photography editing and equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer programs, desktop publishing, and related software, such as Adobe: Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Knowledge of basic newspaper editing/publishing principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic advertising sales principles and techniques, including ad design.
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Skill in establishing effective working relationships with Community members, Advertisers, and the public.
  • Skill in writing a variety of newspaper articles and advertisements.
  • Skill in setting priorities to meet established and changing deadlines.
  • Skill in using a variety of word processing, desktop publishing, and related software to produce a bi-weekly newspaper, flyers, brochures, and related materials.
  • Skill in developing and printing black and white film/photos.
  • Must have the ability to perform all physical requirements of the position.
  • Must have the ability for a flexible work schedule that may require working early morning, evening or weekend, based on a work assignment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Community members, Community employees, advertisers, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
