HELTER ASSISTANT - NEW BEGINNINGS

FT/TEMPORARY (3 MONTHS) 

NON EXEMPT - LEVEL 3

SALARY: $10.23

GENERAL DEFINITION:  The Shelter Assistant is responsible for providing screening, orientation, and ongoing direction to shelter clients.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Work is performed under the direction of the Case Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  None

DUTIES:        

Serves as the first contact with potential and existing clients.

  • Screens all crisis calls.
  • Interviews individuals and family members to compile information on social, educational, criminal, institutional, or drug history.
  • Determines eligibility of the person seeking shelter care.
  • Responds as necessary to persons seeking shelter and to the Police Department.

Maintains strict confidentiality for security of the clients and program, while assisting residents and providing support to them under the direction of a caseworker.

  • Responsible for orientation of new residents.
  • Provides all needed supplies to residents through shelter resources.
  • Assists residents in clarifying and prioritizing their needs through the use of active listening techniques.
  • Responsible for assisting individuals seeking shelter care and their children in observing shelter rules and safety rules.
  • Provides rudimentary counseling to agency clients.

Performs clerical duties appropriate to the situation.

  • Completes all required documentation on shelter residents, emergency calls, and related matters within prescribed time limits.
  • Documents any problems that shelter residents, including children, may have in the areas of shelter rules and safety rules.
  • Performs other clerical support tasks as requested.

Performs other duties as assigned or requested, including but not limited to:

  • Participation in on-call scheduling.
  • Participate in a 24-hour shift schedule for the program including weekends and holidays.
  • Performing light housekeeping and maintenance.
  • Caring for children in the shelter.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:   Demonstrates knowledge of victims of violence and their basic needs in time of crisis. Basic Knowledge of the cycle of Domestic Violence.  Good oral and written communication skills.  Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to assist with presentations with small to large group settings.  Knowledge and understanding confidentiality. Ability to write reports and complete forms as may be required. Sensitivity to and awareness of the Zuni Culture.  Zuni Language fluency preferred (but not required).  Ability to maintain a good working relationship with co-workers, fellow employees, outsides agencies, and the general public.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:  High School Diploma or GED, minimum of two (2) years work experience in the area of social services or a related field.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES:  Must have a valid New Mexico Driver’s License with no DWI/DUI convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.  Must have no other criminal convictions.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Subject to a thorough background and FBI Fingerprint check. Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing.  Position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug screening for duration of employment.  Subject to call back, must have a home telephone number available, must have dependable transportation, and must not have been in a domestic violence situation within two (2) years prior to employment.
