SUMMARY:
Maintains and repairs vehicles. Inspects equipment, tests and troubleshoots problems. Orders proper repair parts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Services and repairs equipment.
- Travels to sites as assigned.
- Forwards all repair records to Coordinator as needed.
- Reports to Coordinator on a daily basis.
- Completes reports on Tribal fleet repairs. Gives required paperwork to Coordinator.
- Seeks Coordinator's approval to order needed parts that are out of stock in the shop supply.
- Cleans work area.
- Determines the proper tools for jobs.
- Inspects and tests equipment at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction or breakdown.
- Inspects, and tests trucks and cars. Balances wheels to minimize wear on tires. Rotates wheels at prescribed mileage intervals. Adjusts equipment for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards.
- Disassembles, inspects and replaces worn or broken parts. Fits and adjusts new or required parts.
- Test drives repaired equipment.
- Uses hoist wrenches, gauges, drills or grinders, or other specialized auto mechanic tools and equipment.
- Fuels, oils and greases motor vehicles. Changes filters.
- Maintains parts usage records and orders repair parts from designated suppliers.
- Notifies supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action needed.
- May be required to maintain a small parts storeroom at Tribal shop facility.
- Serves as backup transit driver per FTA KDOT Grants.
- Serves as Dispatcher/Scheduler as needed based on departmental needs.
- Works cooperatively within the work environment, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, and other agencies; as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
To qualify for this position, applicants must at least meet minimum requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification
- One year of experience in vehicle maintenance and/or repair
- Possesses extensive knowledge of all equipment and vehicles utilized by the Transportation Department including operation and maintenance.
- Must have a valid Kansas driver's license and be insurable with the Nation's insurance.
- Must meet all K-Dot & FTA requirements
- Must be willing to substitute for other Transit Drivers.
- Follows all safety and preventative procedures required in the shop area and on the job sites.
- Professional work ethics, manner and appearance.
- Ability to communicate orally.
- Must be patient with all passengers.
- Must be able to operate wheelchair lift and locks.
- Telephone skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Must be punctual and dependable in regular attendance.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Two years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, & ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
- Able to read, write and speak English
- Ability to work efficiently in a highly team-team oriented environment
- Ability to develop positive working relationships with others
- Determining if equipment is ready for service.
- Troubleshooting what is wrong with equipment and repairing it.
- Abilities to lift, carry, push, and pull up to and exceeding 50 pounds on a frequent basis
- Supervision Received: Organizes own work with very little supervision.
- Frequently works in a crouched position or on back lying on mechanic's dolly beneath vehicles.
- Subjected to dust, dirt and grease environment.
- Must be physically able to sit and drive for extended periods of time; up to 40% travel required.
- Must be able to work flexible hours due to schedule changes.
- Must drive on roads in all weather conditions.
