Summary:

The incumbent will be a dental specialist treating pediatric and handicapped patients within all the clinics of the Bad River Health and Wellness Center Dental Program. Performs a full range of professional dental duties in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures, as well as specialized pediatric care including that of medically compromised pediatric patients. Treatment will be performed in both clinical and operating room settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities including the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Making oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity, and a diagnosis of pathological and irregular conditions.
  • Performs restoration of simple and complex cavities with standard and prescribed materials (cement, amalgam, silicate, etc.), space maintenance, and limited orthodontic treatment.
  • Full mouth restoration in operating room under general anesthesia for pediatric and handicapped patients.
  • Administering local anesthesia.
  • Proficient in appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Performing single and relatively uncomplicated multiple extractions of teeth.
  • Scaling of calculus and curettage.
  • Treating mouth and gum infections.
  • Recognizing symptoms of an assortment of systemic diseases and referring cases for medical diagnosis.
  • Will be involved with HPDP actives and programs aimed at pediatric patient population (e.g., Fluoride varnish program, Head Start, WIC, etc).
  • Basic computer skills for completing any necessary administration tasks.
  • Will work with the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) programs; Training will be provided.
  • The incumbent will participate in committee activities, act as a consultant to Hygiene Outreach programs, attend meetings and perform other administrative duties as required and requested by the Dental Director.

Problem Solving: Independently examines, diagnoses, and treats dental diseases or dental health problems for pediatric and handicapped patients. As a pediatric dental specialist, he/she will be expected to be able to handle unusual dental health problems, behavioral problems, and medically compromised patients. The incumbent will receive referrals from other dental and medical professionals. A dental officer at this level (as well as at every level) consults with a physician or other appropriate dental professionals where there is a medical as well as dental problem involved that is beyond his/her level of expertise. His/her work is reviewed in term of the overall efficiency and adequacy of the dental services he/she renders.

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

Education:

  • Must possess a D.D.S. or D.M.D from a dental school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • Must possess a certificate from an accredited two (2) year pediatric dental residency program.

    Licensure:

    Must have and maintain a valid, current, full and unrestricted dental license to practice dentistry in a State, territory or commonwealth of the United States.

    Must be CPR certified and maintain certification during employment and Bad River Health and Wellness Center (BRHWC).

    Other Skills and Abilities:

    A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidence by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employee references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

  • Positive working relationship with others.
  • Possession of high ethical standards; no history of complaints regarding ethics.
  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences.

Background Check:

This position is contingent on ability to pass background check required. This position requires a Caregiver Check regarding working with children and/or elderly. Also requires check on licensing to verify that they are valid and eligible.

Work requires long periods of sitting, recurring bending and reaching during clinical procedures. Also requires walking, balance and reach with hands and arms up to 50lbs. Above average dexterity is also required in presenting demonstrations of oral hygiene techniques and in manipulating instruments.

The work is most often performed in the clinic areas. The dentist is regularly exposed to communicable diseases and routinely wears protective mask, eyewear, gown and gloves while performing clinical work.
